Editor-in-Chief of OBM Neurobiology

Bart Ellenbroek

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Neurology at the University “La Sapienza” in Rome. He started his academic career being appointed in 1983 as Assistant Professor of Human Anatomy at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. In 1992 he was nominated Associate Professor of Human Anatomy at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Camerino. From 2001 to 2023 from 2001 to 2023 held the chair of Human Anatomy as Full Professor. From 2013 to 2021 he was Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Products Sciences of the University of Camerino. He is currently director of the second level Vocational International Master in Aesthetic Medicine and Therapeutics of the University of Camerino.

From March 2011 to date is President of the Foundation Centro Internazionale Radio Medico (C.I.R.M.), the historical structure of Italian telemedicine, which has been operating since 1935 and provides free medical assistance to ships and aircraft without a doctor on board.

Prof. Amenta’s scientific activity was focused on the following topics:

- Analysis of receptor systems for central and peripheral neurotransmitters using radioreceptor assay, autoradiography, in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry techniques. In this line of research, particular attention was focused on the characterisation of subtypes of peripheral dopamine receptors and neurotransmission markers and cholinergic receptor subtypes in the central nervous system and at the periphery.

- Quantitative morphological aspects of brain senescence and brain damage from hypertension, with regard to sensitivity to pharmacological therapies.

- Revaluation of cholinergic precursor therapies on adult-onset cognitive dysfunctions.

- Organizational and innovative aspects of telemedicine, with reference to maritime telemedicine and the improvement of standards of medical care at sea.

He is the author of 7 books (2 of which in English) on neuroanatomy, aging brain and peripheral neurotransmitter systems, of 560 scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals and that use peer-review systems. 74 of these publications are review articles and 11 clinical trials coordinated by Prof. Amenta.

In terms of bibliometric parameters, the following data should be mentioned.

Scopus: H index: 51 + 4 + 1.

In the last evaluation of the Top Italian Scientists was the 261 in the list of top Italian Neuroscientists and 1# of the University of Camerino.

Within the framework of the most recent scientific interests, Professor Amenta has carried out a series of preclinical and clinical research on the reassessment of the role of choline-containing phospholipids in the treatment of adult-onset dementia disorders.

Prof. Amenta’s most recent field of scientific activity is the application of machine learning methodologies and artificial intelligence to instrumental diagnostics (neuroimaging) of Alzheimer’s disease and telemedicine to improve the standards of medical care of the so-called remote patients. This approach, also directed to the study of the pandemic by Covid 19, led, only in 2020, to the publication of 10 articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

Najam SharifNajam Sharif, PhD, DSc has >34-years’ pharmaceutical drug discovery research/development experience covering Neuroscience and Ophthalmology. His 22-year tenure at Alcon resulted in his contributions to the discovery, characterization, development and US FDA approvals of Patanol®/Pataday®/Pazeo® and Emadine® to treat allergic conjunctivitis, and Travatan® and Simbrinza® for the treatment of ocular hypertension / Glaucoma. Currently, he is Vice President, Global Alliances and External Research, Ophthalmology Innovation Center at Santen Inc USA, where he has been instrumental in establishing, nurturing and managing long term partnerships with pharma companies and collaborations with several global universities. Dr. Sharif  serves on numerous committees of many  learned Societies (including ISER, elected Trustee of AOPT & Gold Fellow; Gold Fellow of ARVO and Fellow of British Pharmacological Society (BPS)).  Dr. Sharif is Editorial Board member of many Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Ophthalmic journals.  He also serves on the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Board of The Glaucoma Foundation. He is the recipient of the inaugural “Dr. Roger Vogel Award” for ocular pharmaceutical research (ARVO Foundation, 2014), the recipient of the “Sir James Black Award” for contributions to drug discovery (BPS, 2017), and awardee of the “Ernst H. Barany Prize” for outstanding contributions to ocular pharmacology (2020). Dr. Sharif is an Adjunct Professor / Honorary Senior Lecturer / Senior Principal Investigator and Graduate Faculty at multiple Universities worldwide. He has also been a PhD-candidates’ supervisor, advisor and mentor to several students at numerous academic institutions. Dr. Sharif has published >215 scientific articles, edited 3 books, holds 24 issued US/EU patents, and has filed additional >30 patent applications over the last two decades.


Editor-in-Chief of OBM Geriatrics

Calogero CarusoCalogero Caruso, formerly Full Professor of General Pathology, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Palermo, Italy. He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Palermo, Italy, in 1971 (magna cum laude). He was founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Immunity & Ageing (2004-2018), and, as of November 2021, he is the author of 391 publications (14,146 citations), mainly on aging, diseases related to age and longevity, immunosenescence and immunopathology, indexed on Scopus (H index of 62). He has recently edited the book “Centenarians. An example of positive biology.” for Springer Nature and, with Prof. Giuseppina Candore, the book “Human Aging. From Cellular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Strategies”. He was national coordinator of Italian Ministerial Project on Centenarians and Longevity (2017-2020). He was Coordinator of the PhD program in Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology (formerly Pathobiology) (1998-2018). The national and international recognition of his scientific achievements in the field of Biogerontology is documented by funded projects, by the number of citations of his papers, by invitations to national and international congresses and meetings, by his activity as a project reviewer and by organization of international conferences.

Suni Professor Zhe-Sheng (Jason) Chen obtained a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Pharmacology from Kagoshima University, Japan. Dr. Chen also holds an MD degree from Guangdong Medical and Pharmaceutical College and a Master’s degree in Toxicology from Sun Yat-Sen Medical University, China. Currently Dr. Chen is a Professor at St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Dr. Chen is also the Director of Institute for Biotechnology at St. John’s University. He has published more than 200 scientific publications. Dr. Chen is the founding Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Cancer Research Updates and is also the Editor-in-Chief for Recent Patents on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery and Journal of New Developments in Chemistry, as well as an editor of African Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. He is an editorial board member of 26 journals and a reviewer of more than 250 peer-reviewed journals. As a consultant to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and health industry organizations, Dr. Chen commands invitations for more than 290 presentations, keynote addresses, and conference chairman. Suni Professor Narayan S. Hosmane obtained a Ph.D. degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Prof. Hosmane is currently a Distinguished Research Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and an Inaugural Board of Trustees Professor at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. He received the coveted Humboldt Research Award for senior scientists twice. This award is presented annually, by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany, to scientists worldwide as a tribute to their lifelong accomplishments. He was the founder of Boron in the Americas (formerly known as BUSA) and hosted the organization's first meeting in Dallas in April 1988. He has published over 300 papers in leading scientific journals and was ranked by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in the top 50 percent of the most cited chemists in the world from 1981–1997. In September 2007, at the launch of the NRI Institute's Washington D.C. chapter, the NRI Institute presented him with its Pride of India Gold Award, in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments. That following January, he was honored by the same NRI Institute with its Lifetime Achievement Pravasi Award and Bharath Samman Medal during the Annual Conference held in New Delhi, India. A fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Institute of Chemists, he has also been listed in Who's Who in the World. In June 2018, Narayan Hosmane was honored with a Special Dedicated Issue of Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, published by the Elsevier Science.

Zhao Yang DongZhao Yang Dong (M’99–SM’06-F'17) obtained Ph.D. degree from the University of Sydney, Australia in 1999. He is currently the SHARP professor and Director of the University of New South Wales Digital Grid Futures Institute, The University of New South Wales, Australia. He is also Director for ARC Research Hub for Integrated Energy Storage Solutions. He was previously Professor and Head of School of Electrical and Information Engineering, University of Sydney, and Ausgrid Chair and Director of the Ausgrid Centre for Intelligent Electricity Networks, the University of Newcastle, Australia. He also held industrial positions with Transend Networks (now TAS Networks), Australia. His research interests include smart grid, power system planning, power system security, renewable energy systems, electricity market, load modelling, and computational intelligence and its application in power engineering. He is serving/served as an editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Power Engineering Letters, and IET Renewable Power Generation.HE is Fellow of IEEE.

Dr IMR Fattah is a Research Fellow in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology Sydney, where he is researching the effective use of waste for sustainable energy applications. His research interests stem from the PhD in the combustion of renewable fuels he completed at the University of New South Wales in 2019, where he focused on the reduction of emissions (particularly PM/soot) from diesel combustion. Dr IMR Fattah was named one of the Top 2% of Scientists in the World in 2021 by Elsevier BV and Stanford University. He is actively engaged in the field by editing four books, publishing 3 book chapters, over 90 international publications in prestigious international journals. He is serving as an 'Associate Editor' at editorial boards of multiple prestigious journals. He is managing/has managed ten topical/special issues as 'Guest Editor'. He has also peer-reviewed over 275 journal articles throughout his career. Dr IMR Fattah would like to remain at the forefront of research in the field of renewable and sustainable energy.

Jennifer KeoghProfessor Roger Gläser received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Stuttgart in 1997. After a research stay at the School of Chemical Engineering of Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, he returned to the University of Stuttgart and completed his habilitation in Chemical Technology in January 2007. Since August 2007, he is a Full Professor of Chemical Technology and the Director of the Institute of Chemical Technology at Leipzig University. His research interests include the preparation and characterization of novel sorbents and catalysts with defined nanoporosity, aftertreatment of diesel off-gas by SCR-based technologies, the utilization of renewable resources, photocatalysis and diffusion in heterogeneous catalysis. He currently serves as dean of his faculty, head of the commission of the German Catalysis Society and head of the German Zeolite Association.

HosseinkhaniDr. Hossein Hosseinkhani, Biomedical Engineer, has broad experience in life sciences and is an expert in nanotechnology, biomaterials, drug delivery, 3D in vitro systems, bioreactor technology, and bioengineering stem cells technology. His working experience is mainly attributed to academia and industry of biomedical engineering research and development (which includes several years of basic science research experience in a number of premier institutions related to the structure and function of biomaterials, and in polymer-based and mineral-based medical implants development in the medical device industry). Jennifer KeoghDr Keogh was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Adelaide Australia for a thesis entitled “Nutrition and Vascular Health”. She holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia for a thesis entitled Bone Mass and Body Composition in Adults: Effects of Liver Transplantation. Dr Keogh is Associate Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of South Australia (2010). She qualified as a dietitian from the College of Technology Dublin which is now the Technological University Dublin where she holds the title of Adjunct Professor. Dr Keogh was awarded a Fellowship of the South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program funded by the Heart Foundation and the Government of South Australia, March 2013 - March 2016. She also received The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s Medal for Research Excellence in 2005. She is a member of the University of South Australia’s Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition and Activity Research Centre. Dr Keogh had a career in clinical dietetics and held leadership positions at the Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte’s Special Health Authority in London, St. James Hospital London, the Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania, Australia and Ballarat Health Services, Victoria, Australia. She has a substantial scientific output with 150 peer reviewed publications to date, an h-index of 44 and 5934 citations (Scopus 2021).

Calogero CarusoAss. Prof. Dr. rer. nat./ med. habil. / h.c. (YSU) Thomas Liehr is working in cytogenetics since 1991. He is head of the molecular cytogenetic group at the Institute of Human Genetics, Jena, Germany since 1998. Before he was coworker and PhD-fellow of the Herbert Quandt Stiftung der VARTA-AG at the Institute of Human Genetics, Erlangen, Germany. Concerning diagnostics, he signs out personally hundreds of (molecular) cytogenetic reports per year. Since 2002, he is clinical laboratory geneticist (Germany), and since 2015, ErCLG (European registered clinical laboratory geneticist. The results of his research are published in >15 books, >100 book chapter, >850 referred papers, and ~1000 abstracts. His particular expertise is development and application of multicolor-FISH probe sets for the characterization of marker chromosomes. He is specialist for the characterization of small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMC) and he collected all available literature on this special field on the freely available sSMC homepage. Bruce O’Hara received his PhD in Human and Mammalian Genetics from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1988, where he studied mouse models of trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), comparative genomics, and developmental neurobiology. He then did postdoctoral work at NIDA/NIH investigating genes involved in various drug responses and genetic predisposition to substance use disorders. He next spent twelve years at the Stanford University Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology where he established a research program directed towards an understanding of sleep using higher throughput behavioral and genomic methodologies. He then joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky, Dept. of Biology in 2003. He currently has over 35 years of experience in mammalian genetics and especially mouse models of human disease, and has over 95 publications in areas ranging from the effects of drugs to large-scale genetic screens and models of neurodegenerative disorders. Most of these studies utilize the piezoelectric sleep-wake monitoring system developed by O’Hara and colleagues at Stanford and the University of Kentucky, and later commercialized by Signal Solutions in 2009. This technology is now used in laboratories across the world.

Gerhard Litscher, Univ.-Prof. MSc PhD MDsc, currently holds a position as a full professor at the Swiss University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SWISS TCM UNI) in Switzerland/Europe, where he specializes in High-Tech Acupuncture and Digital Chinese Medicine.

He is also President of the International Society for Medical Laser Applications (ISLA transcontinental, since 2012), German Vice President of the German-Chinese Research Foundation (DCFG, since 2014) for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Vice Chairperson of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (Committee of Card. Rehab. (2023-2028)), Honorary President of the European Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies (2023), Honorary Professor of China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (2023) and Chairman of Consensus Guidelines for Laser Acupuncture of the World Association for photobiomoduLation Therapy (WALT). He is a member of the expert panels of the World Health Organization (WHO) for acupuncture and related fields, and is honorary or guest professor at 12 top universities and institutions in China.

Gerhard Litscher was Head of the Research Unit for Complementary and Integrative Laser Medicine (2012-2023), of the Research Unit of Biomedical Engineering in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (2005-2023) and Founding Director and Chairman of the TCM Research Center (2007-2023) at the Medical University of Graz in Austria/Europe.

He is a Doctor of Technical Sciences and Doctor of Medical Sciences and has published approximately 700 scientific contributions (~300 SCI/PubMed-listed). (Austria / Switzerland - Europe).

Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Environmental and Engineering Research

Suni Zed Rengel earned his B.Sc.(Honours) and M.Sc. degrees from Zagreb University (Croatia), and PhD degree from Louisiana State University (USA). He is full Professor of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition at the University of Western Australia (since 2001). Zed supervised 42 postdoctoral fellows, and 39 PhD, 17 MSc and 46 Honours students, and hosted 66 visiting scientists from all over the world. Zed was awarded 9 prizes, 28 fellowships and awards, 4 Honorary Professorships and 5 Visiting Professorships. He gave 50 invited keynote addresses at international Conferences and presented 322 invited seminars at 78 Universities and Professional Societies in 28 countries. Zed is the author/co-author of 400+ publications in peer-refereed international journals and 46 invited book chapters. He edited 8 books and 6 Journal Special Issues. Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Animal Genetics, Transgenesis and Zoonoses

SuniJuergen A. Richt received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and PhD in Virology and Immunology from the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (1988), both in Germany. Afterwards, he completed three years of postdoctoral/residency studies at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA. Next, Dr. Richt returned for eight years to the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen as a junior faculty to establish his own research program. He later served for eight years as a Veterinary Medical Officer at the National Animal Disease Center (USDA-ARS) in Ames, Iowa.

Dr. Richt came to Kansas State University in 2008 as The Regents Distinguished Professor and Kansas Bioscience Eminent Scholar. In 2010, he became Director of the Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases (CEEZAD), which is working with Principal Investigators in 16 different universities, as well as various industrial partners. His work in veterinary microbiology has focused mainly on the animal-human interface, called “One Health” that links human medicine, veterinary medicine and the environment. Dr. Richt has edited several books, published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles and raised more than $33 million in grants for veterinary research.

Haval Shirwan is Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Director of Division of Pediatric Research, and Associate Director of Immunomodulation and Regenerative Medicine Pillar, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, School of Medicine, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA. He conducted his graduate studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara, CA, and Postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. Dr. Shirwan joined the University of Missouri in 2020 after holding academic appointments at various academic institutions in the United States. His research focuses on modulating the immune system for the treatment of various immune-based diseases with a focus on type 1 diabetes, transplantation (cell, tissue, and solid organs), and cancer immunoprevention and immunotherapy. He co-pioneered with Esma S. Yolcu the concept of transient and positional display of novel immunological ligands on biologic surfaces, ProEx™, as a practical alternative to ectopic gene expression for immunomodulation. He is a member of National Academy of Inventors, an inventor with 27 issued patents, a founder/co-founder of 3 biotech companies, widely published, organized/lectured at numerous national/international conferences, and a member of several national and international societies.

Osamu Yokosuka is an Emeritus Professor of Chiba University, Japan. He graduated from Chiba University School of Medicine in 1975 then worked as a trainee under Professor K. Okuda in Chiba University Hospital till 1978. Dr. Yokosuka was a research fellow worked under Professor S. Scherlock and Professor B. H. Billing in Royal Free Hospital, London, UK from 1978 to 1980; under Professor M. Omata in Chiba University from 1980 to 1985; and under Dr. J Summers in Fox Chase Cancer Center, PA, USA in 1984. In 1985, he received a Degree of Doctor of Medical Science, and served as an Assistant Professor in Chiba University till 1994, then as Lecturer in Medicine till 2006 when he was appointed as Director and Professor of Medicine. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the Dean of Chiba University School of Medicine.

Dr. Yokosuka was the Secretary General of APASL (2008-2014). In 2016, he was elected as the President of APASL Tokyo, the President of 52nd Annual Meeting of Japan Society of Hepatology, and the President of Funabashi Central Hospital. Dr. Yokosuka’s research mainly focuses on Hepatitis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma. So far, he has published more than 700 original papers.

Tatsuo Kanda received a medical degree in 1991 at Niigata University School of Medicine, Japan, and his PhD in 1999 at Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. He had post-doctor training for 3 years under Prof. Ratna Ray and Prof. Ranjit Ray at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO, USA. In Dec. 2008, Tatsuo Kanda became a Tenure-track Associate Professor at Department of Medicine and Clinical Oncology, Chiba University, Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. In Feb. 2013, Tatsuo Kanda was nominated a permanent Associate Professor at Department of Gastroenterology and Nephrology, Chiba University, Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. In 2017, Tatsuo Kanda became an Associate Professor, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Nihon University School of Medicine. For ~25 years, he has focused his scientific interests on the topics related to liver diseases including acute liver failure, viral hepatitis and autoimmune liver diseases, and worked with Prof. Osamu Yokosuka. Tatsuo Kanda is also an expert for hepatitis A virus (HAV), HBV and HCV, and translation and replication of these viruses, and hepatocarcinogenesis. With his expertise in antiviral therapies and hepatitis virus research, Tatsuo Kanda also sees a lot of patients in clinical daily practice. Tatsuo Kanda has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed Journal.
