About This Topic

SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) being the main drivers of economic growth, should be crucial actors in efforts to achieve sustainable development, as they are responsible for the largest environmental impact and industrial pollution worldwide. Their impact on social and environmental issues grants them a fundamental role in sustainable development, despite the lack of resources, capabilities, and expertise. Collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders, including governments, suppliers, customers, consultants, competitors, and universities, contribute to the adoption of sustainable practices by SMEs. Regional and national sustainability initiatives can benefit from the development of networks supporting eco-innovation in SMEs, helping to overcome local challenges, such as reducing polluting emissions, energy and water consumption, material substitution, reuse, and recycling, and health and safety prevention programs.

Rapid changes in political regulations, climate change, scarcity of natural resources, and stakeholder pressures for more sustainable practices represent additional risks but also opportunities for innovation and differentiation in capturing new markets for SMEs. This environmental uncertainty makes the business environment unpredictable and challenging in terms of operations, competitiveness, and sustainability for SMEs.

This special issue encourages researchers to submit work addressing topics related to the following themes:

  • Obstacles in the introduction and integration of sustainable development practices.
  • Organizational competitiveness based on eco-innovation.
  • Industry challenges in the face of economic uncertainty.
  • Sustainability processes in industry and services.
  • Challenges in combating climate change.
  • Effects of technological transition on organizational operations.
  • Opportunities and challenges in the energy transition of the automotive industry.
  • Contributions of AI to sustainability.
  • Uncertainty associated with the technological transition to more environmentally friendly technologies.
  • Creation of sustainable products in response to new market opportunities.
  • Effects of climate change and extreme events on the economy and society.
  • Volatility of resource prices due to changes in supply chains.
  • Opportunities inherent in technological innovations and the transition to a green economy.
  • Adoption of clean technologies in operational processes.
  • Access to financing for SMEs to adapt to environmental uncertainty.
  • Geopolitical and economic uncertainties arising from new strategic directions of states.
