About This Topic

Gene therapy is the treatment of a disease through transferring genetic material into cells of the patients. Manipulation of a patient's genome for therapeutic ends is being attempted through numerous methods, some of which have resulted in disease-modifying interventions. There remain concerns about safety, efficacy and durability. In the recent several years, gene therapy has experienced rapid progress and achieved some success. Over two dozen gene therapies have been approved for clinical use by the drug regulatory agencies from different countries. Various strategies employed in gene therapy include ex vivo gene delivery; gene addition; inherited disease; and somatic gene therapy. The advances in this field will be summarized in this special issue.
